What Your Photographer Should Know About You Before You Ever Show Up

Sep 2 2026 | By: Amy Crosby Photography

There's a version of a brand photo shoot that goes like this: you show up, the photographer tells you where to stand, you smile, they click, you leave. The photos are fine. Technically fine. But when you see them, something feels flat. They look like you, but they don't feel like you.

That's what happens when the work before the shoot doesn't happen.

The photos that make you stop scrolling — the ones where someone looks completely themselves, confident and natural and real — didn't happen by accident. They happened because of everything that was figured out before a single photos was ever taken.

Here's what I need to know about you before you ever walk through the door.

Who you are — not just what you do

Your job title town’t tell me much. What I actually need to know is how you want people to feel when they encounter your brand. Warm and approachable? Polished and authoritative? Creative and a little unexpected? Bold and no-nonsense?

That feeling determines everything — location, lighting, wardrobe direction, posing, even the expressions we're going for. Without it, we're just taking photos. With it, we're telling a story.

Who you're talking to

Your ideal client is in every photo decision we make together. A somatic therapist who works with anxious clients needs visuals that feel safe and approachable. A business consultant going after corporate contracts needs to look like she belongs in that room. A wellness entrepreneur selling high-end retreats needs images that feel aspirational but not cold.

When I know who you're trying to reach, I can help make sure the photos speak directly to that person — before you ever write a word on your website.

What you're walking into the shoot carrying

This is where my background in social work comes in — and honestly, it might be the thing that sets my process apart the most.

Most people don't show up to a photo shoot feeling relaxed and camera-ready. They show up carrying all-the-feelings. Maybe it's years of hating photos of themselves. Maybe it's imposter syndrome about the level they're stepping into. Maybe it's nerves about being seen, really seen, in a way that feels vulnerable.

I want to know that before we start. Not so I can fix it, but so I can work with it — so we can create an environment where you actually exhale, and the camera catches you in a moment that feels real instead of performed.

What's happening in your business right now

Are you launching something new? Rebranding? Stepping into a bigger audience? Just hired your first employee? All of that shapes what we create together.

A shoot for someone in the middle of a launch looks different than a shoot for someone who's just starting to put themselves out there. A shoot for someone adding a new service needs to capture that expanded vision. The more I understand about where you are and where you're headed, the more intentional we can be about the images we create.

The logistics that make you feel like yourself

Do you need a few minutes to warm up before you feel comfortable? Do you hate posed photos but light up when you're doing something with your hands? Are there angles or expressions you love — or ones that make you cringe every time?

This isn't vanity. This is useful information. The more I know going in, the less time we spend on things that don't work, and the more images we get that actually feel like you.

This is why the planning session matters

All of this is why I don't just send you a contract and a location pin and call it prep. Before every shoot, we go through a brand questionnaire and have a real conversation about your business, your people, your vision, and your nerves.

By the time you show up, I already know you. And that changes everything about what we're able to create together.

If you've had a shoot before that felt fine but not quite right, this is probably why. And if you're thinking about booking one, this is what to look for.
