5 Tips For Fall And Winter Photoshoots

Oct 3, 2022 | By: Amy Crosby Photography

Having a branding photoshoot outdoors in the fall or winter can lead to some breathtaking photos. The vibrant landscapes make beautiful backdrops, plus the added bonus of foregoing any rental fees! The weather does throw in some extra factors to consider, but that just means you’ll need to come extra prepared! Here are 5 tips to make the most out of your outdoor fall and winter branding photos.

  1. Dress warm!

Layers, layers, layers! As any native New Englander knows, the key to staying warm and comfortable during outdoor photoshoots in the colder months is to dress in layers. It’s easy to remove layers for a moment to change up an outfit for a few photos, too. Also, you’ll look much happier and vibrant if you’re not cold, tense and shivering throughout the photoshoot.

In addition to showing off your brand colors, wearing seasonal colors like reds, oranges and creams tie in the beauty of the fall season. However, during winter months, bright reds and pops of color look spectacular against the white snow landscape.

  1. Get to know your location ahead of time

As with any photo shoot, scoping out the location beforehand and finding the “perfect spot” allows you to make the most of the time you have on the day of your photoshoot. This will also allow you to be familiar with the area and get a feel for if it’s truly where you want to take your branding photos. There’s nothing worse than showing up and realizing it isn’t quite as magical as you had hoped! Just remember not to venture too far away from your vehicle or the path, especially in snow.

  1. Be flexible

You can never perfectly predict the weather, especially if you are trying to catch an autumn sunset with no wind or a fresh snowfall. Keep an eye on weather reports as your shoot date gets closer.. If the weather isn’t ideal or becomes a safety issue, reschedule. It's always a good idea to have an indoor location as well.

  1. Bring the essentials

It’s unavoidable- your nose will run and your lips will look chapped from the chilly air and cold winds. Make sure you pack tissues and chapstick to keep yourself looking picture-ready. If it’s a colder day, consider bringing some feet and hand warmers, a blanket and a nice hot tea or coffee to keep yourself warm and comfortable throughout the photoshoot. Don’t forget the branded and seasonal props, too!

        5. Have Fun!

Your branding photoshoot should be a fun and enjoyable experience, not a stressful one. Be sure to remind yourself to enjoy your session and to make the most of the time you have. Your branding photos will always look better and more genuine when you are having fun and enjoying yourself!
