6 Questions You Should Ask Your Photographer

Dec 1, 2022 | By: Amy Crosby Photography

When you’re hiring a branding photographer, you aren’t just hiring someone to take pictures for you. You want someone who understands your brand, vision and style and can portray that visually through the finished photos.

How do you pick through the pool of photographers and just pick the right one? There are three key questions you should ask while narrowing down your pick, and three questions after you make your pick. Asking these questions allows you to be more prepared going in and can help you make the most of your brand photoshoot.

3 Questions To Ask When You’re Deciding

  1. What’s your process?

You want to know how your branding photographer plans to help you create captivating photos to portray your brand and enhance your marketing. This is the goal of brand photography and each photographer may have their own way of making it happen. You’ll want to be clear on their process so you are able to be prepared for anything you may have to handle yourself, such as securing a location.

  1. How do you select and secure a location?

Most photographers will have a short list of indoor and outdoor photoshoot locations they are familiar with. When you’re interviewing photographers, be sure to ask if they are able to guide you in picking a location or if they secure the photoshoot location themselves. If they take care of it for you or have a studio of their own to use, that’s one less thing you have to worry about!

  1. What’s included in the photoshoot package?

The most important question to ask your pool of photographers is - “What am I getting?”. This includes everything from the amount of hours included for the photoshoot to whether they will help with your hair, wardrobe and makeup. Another important piece that often goes overlooked is the usage rights on your finished photos. You want to make sure that you’ll have full commercial rights to your pictures for an unlimited amount of time.

Before you make your final decision, consider each photographer’s response to these questions and decide who you best align with for your needs. Once you have made your decision and picked a photographer for your branding photoshoot, there are three more important questions to ask before the day of your photoshoot, so you can be fully prepared to make the best of the time allotted.

3 Questions To Ask Your Photographer

  1. How will you gather inspiration for your photoshoot?

Your brand photos should align with your brand and personality. To do this, your photographer and yourself need to be on the same page when it comes to what you want your photos to portray. Some photographers ask that you put together a mood board to better visualize your brand’s style and your personality. Ask your photographer if a mood board, brainstorming session, or other method would be helpful to pull together inspiration for your photoshoot.

  1. What should you wear?

Your wardrobe for the photos will depend on a few factors - weather, location, your brand colors and personality, etc. Your photographer will most likely be more than happy to help you pull together a few on-brand outfits to make your photos stand out, while keeping you comfortable and confident.

  1. What should you bring for props?

Some photographers will have some versatile props on hand for you to use, but others may require you to bring your own. Ask your photographer about any available props and for suggestions on what you could bring from home to help add that spark of personality to your brand photos. It could be as simple as your favorite coffee mug or a bright red scarf!

Taking the leap and booking a professional photoshoot can be overwhelming. It’s important to feel confident in your photographer and prepared for the experience itself. Your photographer is there to help guide you through it, so make sure to speak up and ask the important questions.
