How to prepare for your Branding Photo Shoot

You’ve made the decision to hire a professional brand photographer and have a branding photo session for your business- congratulations! This is a huge step in solidifying your brand identity and elevating your professional image. If you’ve never done one, then you are in for a treat. But what happens first, and how can you ensure your session is a success?

As you prepare, there are a number of things to think about, and it can be overwhelming. Since this is what my business specializes in, I’ve compiled a list of tasks and suggestions to direct the process and calm your nerves. These are the three most important ones to think about- I’ll guide you through the rest.

First, your outfits. Bring three or four options with you. What do you feel confident in? What do you wear that you think most represents who you are in your business? What would you wear to meet with a client? Beyond that, consider bringing options for a variety of seasons so you look like you’re in business year-round. Bold solid colors tend to photograph well and give more longevity and also serve to keep the focus on you, rather than a busy print.

Don’t know what to wear? Ask your photographer! I love when my clients message me outfit ideas before the shoot because I can give them direction and keep them in line with their brand. Since branding is about consistency, your outfit colors matter- use the hues in your logo as a jumping off point. Alternatively, hire a stylist to select outfits with you, and read my other blog 7 Wardrobe Pieces For Your Branding Shoot.

Second, your perspective. Many clients avoid photo sessions because they don’t feel attractive. Photos are powerful in this way, because my job is to use images in that show you how the world sees you ( I promise others see you in a far better light that you imagine). We are hyper critical of our own appearances, but when you see the difference made by professional hair and makeup, and the strategic lighting and posing I use, you’ll be amazed at how you actually appear as well as how this provides a better foundation for your business.

Third, your props. Bring the things you use when you’re in action in your business. Probably, your laptop. Anything with your logo on it- tote bags, coffee mug, hats, notebooks, and pens. Books which are related to your industry, or your own, if you’ve published a book. Any products you sell. Keep the colors in line with your brand colors here too.

You can also think about a list of your ideal shots beforehand and communicate with your photographer. However, I’ll likely use a combination of standing, sitting and “working” poses to give you the most value and the broadest selection possible. We’ll get some more close up ones and some full length shots, and I’ll direct you on how to stand, how to hold your head, where to place your hands. My ability to see the final results before I take a single photo will benefit your images.
