If you've been in business for more than a couple of years, you already know that who you are today is not who you were when you started. Your offers have changed. Your clients have changed. Your confidence has changed. You probably even changed the answer to "so what do you do?" about four times before it finally felt right.
And yet — for a lot of small business owners — the photos on their website are still from that very first season. The one where you were figuring it all out, charging way less than you should have been, and honestly just grateful anyone wanted to hire you at all.
Those photos tell that story. Even if you've moved way past it.
This is the season of figuring it out. You're building, experimenting, and finding your footing. Your brand photos from this season often reflect that energy — enthusiastic, a little unpolished, maybe taken by a friend or in your living room with good natural light and hopeful intentions.
There's nothing wrong with that. Everyone starts somewhere. But these photos have a shelf life, and it's shorter than most people think.
This is when things start clicking. You know who you serve. You know what you're good at. Clients are coming in, referrals are happening, and you're starting to feel like you actually know what you're doing.
This is one of the best times to invest in brand photography — because you finally have enough clarity to translate it into visuals. You know your colors, your vibe, your people. A good shoot in this season creates images that can carry you for a couple of years.
Maybe you niched down. Maybe you added a new offer or dropped one that wasn't working. Maybe you raised your rates significantly and started attracting a different kind of client. Fall is the season of refinement — and it's also the season where the gap between your photos and your reality tends to show up most obviously.
This is the "something feels off but I can't figure out what it is" season. And often, it's the photos.
You're playing a bigger game now. Speaking, writing, being featured, building a team, going after larger clients or contracts. The stakes are higher and the audiences are bigger — which means more people are forming first impressions of you based on what they find online.
Winter calls for photos that match that level. Not stiff or overly corporate, but polished, intentional, and fully aligned with where you're headed — not where you've been.
One of the biggest misconceptions small business owners have about brand photography is that you need to have everything figured out before you book a shoot. New website, new logo, new everything — then photos.
But that's actually not always the case. Updated photos can be the thing that clarifies your direction, reignites your confidence, and gives your brand the refresh it needs without a full overhaul.
You don't need a new brand. Sometimes you just need photos that reflect the season you're actually in.
I work with small business owners to figure out exactly what that looks like — starting with a brand questionnaire and a planning session so that by the time you're in front of my camera, we're telling the right story for right now.
Which season are you in? If your photos aren't keeping up, let's change that.
