If you’ve been putting off a brand photo session because you hate having your picture taken — you’re not alone. I hear some version of this from almost every client before we work together.
“I’m not photogenic.”
“I never know what to do with my hands.”
“I just don’t feel comfortable in front of a camera.”
Here’s what I want you to know: none of that disqualifies you from having photos that genuinely represent you and your business. It just means the how matters as much as the what.
There’s a myth that great brand photos require a certain kind of person — outgoing, naturally expressive, comfortable being the center of attention. That’s not true. Some of my most compelling client photos have come from women who walked in nervous and walked out genuinely surprised by what they saw.
What makes a photo feel real isn’t confidence in front of a lens. It’s clarity about who you are and what you want people to feel when they find you. That’s something every business owner has — it just needs to be drawn out the right way.
A big reason people freeze on shoot day is that they feel unprepared. They don’t know what to wear, what to expect, or what story they’re trying to tell. That uncertainty shows up in photos.
My process starts well before we ever pick up a camera. Every client completes a brand questionnaire and works through a planning session with me where we talk about your business, your audience, your goals, and the feeling you want your images to create. By the time shoot day arrives, you already know the plan. There’s nothing to figure out in the moment — you just get to show up and be yourself.
“Being yourself” is actually the goal
I know that phrase gets thrown around a lot, but I mean it practically. We’re not going for a polished, performative version of you. We’re going for the version of you that your best clients already know — the one who shows up prepared, present, and genuinely invested in the people she serves.
That version of you is photogenic. I promise.
You just have to be willing to show up. The rest is my job — creating an environment where you feel settled, directing you in a way that feels natural rather than posed, and knowing which moments to capture when you forget the camera is there.
The women I work with aren’t models. They’re business owners with real work to do and real clients to serve. Their photos should reflect that — not some glossy, unrecognizable version of themselves.
If you’ve been waiting until you feel “ready” to invest in brand photos, this is your sign that ready isn’t a feeling. It’s a decision.
